Murphy hits 100 career points in lacrosse's first win

By Annie Renz

Grace Murphy and the Stonehill women’s lacrosse team had much to celebrate after their win against Merrimack College on Feb. 22.

Their victory marked their first win of the season after battling tough losses against Boston University and UMass Lowell.

Junior captain Grace Murphy led the Skyhawks’ offense with four goals and two assists. These stats pushed Murphy past the 100-career points milestone.

Murphy knew that she was close to the milestone, but she didn’t give the statistics any thought prior to the game.

“I have this superstition where I don’t look at any stats or articles throughout the season. Somebody told me over winter break that I was gonna reach it this season. I was like, it’s a long season, you never know,” she said.

With Murphy’s effort on the attack, she made the thought a reality just three games into her third season at Stonehill.

She said, “It happened in the game, and after the game we took a big group photo and as we're taking the photo, one of the parents was like, ‘Congrats to Grace, you got your 100th point!’”

Murphy credits her work behind the scenes for getting her to this point.

“As an attacker, your main job is to score and to get points. It definitely took a lot of work, like shooting outside of practice and during practice,” she said.

Murphy not only leads the women’s lacrosse team in points (11 goals and 4 assists), she also is one of the team’s captains for the 2025 season.

“When I got the call over the summer that I was named captain, it was just so surreal. I really enjoy being a leader of the team and just having my voice, I think it helps me as a player because when you say things out loud to other people, you have to listen to them yourself. So that has helped me be able to motivate myself and to motivate others,” she said.

Even though this feat came early into the 2025 season, Murphy has her sights set on an NEC Championship as her next career milestone.

“We got so close last year in the semis, and to taste what it felt like to be in the playoffs, now you want the actual milestone to win the championship. That has always been the biggest thing as a team and personally,” she said, “we have high expectations for ourselves going into conference to get back to that playoff spot. There are lots of expectations, but we are ready to face them all.”

Murphy and the Skyhawks returned to W.B. Mason Stadium on Saturday, March 1, against Queens University of Charlotte, losing 10-9.
