SGA fundraiser a "smashing" success

The Summit

Laughter and cheers filled The Hill on Monday as students waited eagerly in line to smash shaving cream-filled tins at their favorite Student Government Association (SGA) members’ faces for a good cause.

The SGA Pie in the Face fundraiser brought in dozens of excited students with pies in hand to splatter shaving cream on their peers in exchange for a $3 donation. The event was held to raise money for the American Red Cross to support those affected by the California wildfires.

"We've done this in previous years, and it's always a hit," said Zachary Dangel, SGA Executive Public Relations Coordinator. "This year, we expanded the number of SGA participants to increase turnout and charitable contributions."

SGA members braced themselves for impact as students cheerfully smashed pies onto their faces, sending white foam flying in every direction. Some members took direct hits to their faces, leaving them completely smothered in shaving cream, but still with huge smiles, nonetheless.

“I pied my rugby teammate in the face, and it was so worth it,” said Erica Dabanka, ‘26. “It was such a fun way to raise money. You don’t have many opportunities to do something like this.”

Andrew Monson, ‘25, was one of many who could not pass up the opportunity to pie someone in the face. “It was very interesting; it’s not an event you would usually think of when you think about a charity event… it was pretty out of nowhere, but I am happy to be a part of it,” he said.

Beyond the roars of laughter, the event struck the heartstrings of some fellow students.

“For me, this charity hits close to home… having family that has had members in their community torn apart by these fires made it really tangible, so knowing that the money is going toward relief efforts makes it even more meaningful,” said Monson.

The Pie in the Face event raised $150, and organizer Zachary Dangel was ecstatic about the turnout and the excitement from each participating student.

"These kinds of events are important because they bring students together for a cause beyond the classroom," Dabanka said. "It’s great to see people having fun while also making a real impact."

As the event came to a close, students wiped shaving cream off their hands while SGA members laughed through their messy faces. One thing was made clear – sometimes, the best way to support a cause is by taking a pie to the face.
