Stonehill College’s baseball team traveled to Miami earlier this month for its longest road trip of the season, against Florida International University from Feb. 14-17.
The team lost all four games, with final scores of 6-7 in the first game, 5-6 in the second, 14-17 in the third and 2-12 in the final game.
The four-game series was an opener against a 4-0 team, said pitcher Hunter Bell.
Before taking the field, team members reflected on the preparation that got them there.
“We felt ready going into the series, we put all that work in the fall and the winter. We knew they would be ready to play, and we knew we were ready to compete,” said Nate Kearney, designated hitter.
The Skyhawks had some positives in the series, including taking the lead in the ninth of the first two games and the bats putting up 27 runs across the four games.
Kearney said the team has a pre-game tradition.
“We pray in the outfield before every game, it is reassuring to feel like God is with us,” said Kearney.
The road trip also allowed the team to grow closer off of the field.
“I was able to get a lot closer with older guys I hadn’t seen because of the different position practices. So, it was special to connect with those guys and build a stronger relationship with them off the field, ” said Bell.
He also expressed his gratitude to have the opportunity to travel and compete with the team.
“It felt amazing and was a huge honor to have the trust from my coaches and teammates to go out and compete in Miami,” Bell said.
Looking to build their game performances, the team was focused on finishing strong,
“There were positives in taking the lead in the 9th innings of the first 2 games of the year, the team will look to closing out more games” said Zack Sultar, the pitching coach.
