TikTok restores service after Trump proposes joint venture

By Caleb Tobin

TikTok is restoring service to 170 million American users after President-elect Donald Trump said he would put off banning the app.

The restoration of service comes after the app was removed from app stores, and service in the U.S. was stopped as part of a ban. To read more about the ban and what led to it, click here.

"...TikTok is in the process of restoring service. We thank President Trump for providing the necessary clarity and assurance to our service providers that they will face no penalties providing TikTok to over 170 million Americans," TikTok said in a statement earlier today.

In a Truth Social post this morning, Trump said he will be signing an executive order to "extend the period of time before the law’s prohibitions take effect." The law, upheld by the Supreme Court, went into effect today.

The deal Trump is proposing consists of the U.S. having a 50% ownership in the app as part of a joint venture between the current owners or new owners. ByteDance, a Chinese-based internet technology company, currently owns the app.

"By doing this, we save TikTok, keep it in good hands and allow it to say up.  Without U.S. approval, there is no Tik Tok.  With our approval, it is worth hundreds of billions of dollars - maybe trillions," Trump said.

Trump had previously supported banning TikTok in the U.S. during his first term when he imposed sanctions on TikTok in 2020.
